Fighting Illini soccer faced a setback in their recent match against Minnesota, losing 3-1 at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. The team now holds a record of 5-5-3 for the season and 1-3-2 in Big Ten play.
Illinois started strong with Kennedy Berschel scoring in the fourth minute. Berschel redirected a shot from Lia Howard, marking her second goal of the season and setting a new career-best.
Minnesota responded with an equalizer in the 16th minute and took the lead six minutes later. The home team maintained their advantage into halftime.
The Illini came close to leveling the score when Makala Woods made an impressive solo run in the 48th minute, but her attempt was saved. Woods had another opportunity in the 64th minute, but again her shot was stopped.
In their continued efforts to equalize, Berschel nearly scored again in the 82nd minute with a long-range effort that was tipped over by the goalkeeper.
Minnesota sealed their victory with a third goal in the 87th minute, securing a decisive win.
The Fighting Illini are set to face No. 20 Wisconsin on Thursday, Oct. 12, at Demirjian Park for their 'Kick Cancer' match, scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. CT.
