Fighting Illini soccer faced a narrow 2-1 defeat against Ohio State at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on Sunday. This result places the Orange and Blue at 5-4-3 for the season and 1-2-2 in Big Ten play.
Ohio State applied early pressure, but Illinois held strong defensively, preventing any shots on target for the first 15 minutes and successfully defending four corner kicks. Illinois had their first opportunity in the 11th minute when Makala Woods created space but directed her shot straight at the goalkeeper.
The Buckeyes found success with a goal from a counterattack in the 18th minute and doubled their lead with another counter-attacking move in the 30th minute, taking a 2-0 advantage into halftime.
In the second half, Illinois began to gain momentum. Bel Rolley nearly scored from distance in the 58th minute, but her shot went over the bar. Sarah Foley had another chance in the 70th minute inside the penalty area but struck too close to Ohio State's keeper.
Lia Howard brought excitement to the closing moments by scoring her second goal of the season in the 83rd minute with a long-range effort over Ohio State's goalkeeper. However, Illinois could not find an equalizer before time ran out.
The Fighting Illini will continue their road trip against Minnesota on Sunday, Oct. 8, at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. The match is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. CT kickoff and will be broadcast on Big Ten Network.
