Nearly 40 Illinois 4-H teens recently showcased their leadership skills at the State Capitol, engaging with state legislators during the 4-H Legislative Connection events held on February 7 and 8, and May 16 and 17. The initiative provides young participants, aged 14-19, a chance to learn about the legislative process while promoting the Illinois 4-H program.
Shelly Nickols-Richardson, University of Illinois Extension director and associate dean, emphasized the significance of these interactions: “The Legislative Connection is a wonderful way for youth to share their stories about their 4-H experiences and activities directly with their legislators.” She noted that through this experience, "4-H youth gain communication and civic engagement skills."
Carl Baker, assistant director of government relations at University of Illinois Extension, highlighted the commitment of these young leaders: “The 4-H youth that attend the Legislative Connection events are our leaders of the future. The youth that attend are fully engaged and committed to learning about the legislative process.”
During these meetings, participants booked appointments with state leaders to discuss the impact of 4-H using persuasive public speaking techniques. Baker referenced House Bill 3814 as an example of successful advocacy by such youths. The bill allows students involved in organizations like 4-H and FFA to be marked present for school funding purposes even when participating in competitions. It passed unanimously in both chambers before being signed into law by Governor Pritzker.
For those interested in further details about this event, information is available on the Legislative Connection webpage.
Illinois 4-H is part of University of Illinois Extension's flagship youth development program under its College of Agriculture, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences. Research indicates that participation in programs like Illinois 4-H significantly increases young people's likelihood to contribute positively to their communities.
