The Champaign Police Department conducted a traffic safety campaign throughout July, reminding motorists to slow down to save lives. The speed enforcement effort was carried out by Champaign Police in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies in a coordinated attempt to reduce speeds and enhance safety on streets.

During the campaign, Champaign Police committed officers to 44 hours of dedicated traffic enforcement focusing on arterial routes, particularly in areas impacting neighborhoods. In July, enforcement efforts by Champaign Police resulted in:

- 46 citations and 2 written warnings for speeding

- 1 child safety seat violation

- 1 felony arrest and illegal gun recovery

- 3 citations issued for driving without a valid license

- 4 citations issued for expired registration

- 1 warning for improper lane usage

The speed enforcement effort was funded by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
