Champaign Police were dispatched at 12:34 a.m. on July 28, 2024, to the 2000 block of Cynthia Drive for a report of a shooting with injuries. Upon arrival, officers located multiple people suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Champaign Police Officers and personnel from the Champaign Fire Department worked quickly to render immediate medical aid until patients could be transported to an area hospital.
A short time later, a victim arrived at an area hospital by personal transport and officers were immediately dispatched to the hospital to conduct interviews. Among the victims were an 18-year-old male from Champaign with a life-threatening gunshot wound to the chest and an 18-year-old female from Champaign with life-threatening gunshot wounds to her leg and torso. Both were transported to an area hospital where they later succumbed to their injuries. Also injured were a 25-year-old female who was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to her arm and a 15-year-old male who was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his leg. They remain hospitalized in stable condition.
The initial investigation indicates that people were gathered in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 2000 block of Cynthia Drive when unknown subjects produced firearms and opened fire. As a result of the gunfire, four victims were struck. In addition to the injuries, property damage has been reported to one vehicle. No arrests have been made at this time in relation to this incident.
Officers continue to canvass the surrounding area for witnesses and video footage that may be of investigative assistance. Any resident or business in the nearby area with exterior surveillance camera systems is encouraged to notify the police department. The investigation remains ongoing. Crime Stoppers will pay cash rewards of $5,000 for tips leading to an arrest in any homicide case, $2,500 for tips leading to an arrest in a felony crime involving a firearm, and up to $1,000 for tips leading to the arrest of those responsible for any other crime.
Update July 28, 2024, 10:05 a.m.: The news release has been updated to reflect the corrected age of one victim as 18-years-old. He was previously reported as being 17 years old. Champaign Police apologize for the error.
