Deputy City Manager Joan Walls, along with Equity and Engagement Department staff members Rachel Joy and Tracy Parsons, recently participated in the LIFT annual Black History Month event at Neil St. Blues. The event, which took place on February 26, 2024, was a gathering aimed at commemorating Black history and engaging families and students in educational activities.
During the event, attendees had the opportunity to delve into historical facts, particularly focusing on the Harlem Renaissance, partake in fun trivia, and provide valuable feedback to LIFT staff regarding their services. Additionally, the LIFT team utilized the occasion to share insights into their upcoming programming for the year 2024.
A significant moment of the evening was when students from LIFT recited the powerful poem "Hey, Black Child" by Useni Eugene Perkins. This recitation added a touch of inspiration to the event, resonating with all those present. Families and participants also relished a delightful meal courtesy of Neil St. Blues, while incentives were provided to encourage active participation.
The event not only served as a platform for cultural enrichment and historical reflection but also as a means for the LIFT organization to connect with the community and showcase their commitment to educational initiatives. Joan Walls and the Equity and Engagement Department members' presence underscored the city's support for such important community events.
