Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has proposed a billion dollars in tax increases during his annual combined Budget Address and State of the State Address to cover the expenses related to the migrant crisis that he invited. State Senator Rose criticized the Governor's plan, stating that increasing taxes by a billion dollars to pay for spending on noncitizens reflects misplaced priorities.
Pritzker's proposal includes cutting the standard deduction and targeting small and large job creators, which could result in Illinois residents earning less and paying more for goods and services. Since taking office, the Governor has significantly increased spending on noncitizen programs, offering services from free housing to free healthcare.
The Governor's budget plan would set a new record as the largest in state history, with an additional $2 billion in spending bringing the total to nearly $53 billion. Members of the Illinois Senate Republican Caucus have been advocating for eliminating the state's sales tax on groceries, but Pritzker's budget lacks provisions for this tax relief, potentially leading to property tax increases for local communities.
Senator Rose expressed commitment to opposing the proposed tax hikes and providing real relief to the citizens of Illinois. He is urging the public to voice their opposition to Pritzker's plan by signing a petition against the tax increases.
