Champaign Police responded to a shooting incident on Sunday, January 14, 2024, in the 100 block of W. Green Street. The victim, a 23-year-old male from Champaign, was found at the scene with a potentially life-threatening gunshot wound. Immediate medical assistance was provided by officers and the Champaign Fire Department, and the victim was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital where he remains in stable condition.
According to the initial investigation, the victim was waiting in a store when an unknown individual approached and attempted to rob him. When the victim refused to cooperate, the suspect produced a firearm and shot him in the torso. The suspect then fled the area and is currently at large. No other injuries have been reported in connection with this incident.
Law enforcement officers are currently conducting a thorough search of the surrounding area for potential witnesses and surveillance footage that may aid in the investigation. Residents and businesses in the vicinity with exterior surveillance cameras are encouraged to contact the police department. At this time, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
