On January 10, 2024, the Champaign County Community Coalition held its monthly meeting at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Champaign, Illinois. The meeting focused on various community initiatives and organizations making a difference in Central Illinois.

One of the highlights of the meeting was the introduction of Illinois Soul, a new media platform set to launch on February 1, 2024. This platform aims to bridge the gap in the media landscape for the black community in Central Illinois. Illinois Soul will feature NPR programming, local news, music shows, and public affairs, providing a much-needed platform for diverse voices in the region.

Community law enforcement agencies also provided updates on recent shootings and violent crimes. They discussed their efforts for community engagement in the coming year, as well as upcoming programs and job opportunities within the departments. The focus was on building trust and collaboration between law enforcement and the community they serve.

RACES (Rape Advocacy Counseling and Education Services) took the opportunity to inform the audience about their prevention and response services. They provided valuable information about the process of handling cases and emphasized the importance of supporting survivors of sexual assault.

The Dispute Resolutions Institute also shared their mission of helping people find resolutions in conflicts. They demonstrated specific examples of conflicts such as foreclosure, money disputes, and contract and volunteer disputes. The organization explained how they handle these conflicts and resolve them in a fair and effective manner.

iRead iCount, a local organization dedicated to improving the achievement gap among children, called for volunteers to support their mission. They are seeking over 200 volunteers for the spring of 2024 to spend one hour a week for seven weeks with kindergarten and 1st-grade students referred to the program. This initiative aims to provide individual attention and support to students who are struggling academically.

In addition to these presentations, community members had the opportunity to share information about upcoming events and programs. This allowed for greater awareness and participation in various community initiatives.

The Champaign County Community Coalition continues to bring together organizations and individuals dedicated to making a positive impact in the region. The January meeting showcased the launch of Illinois Soul, updates from law enforcement agencies, and the important work being done by RACES, the Dispute Resolutions Institute, and iRead iCount. These initiatives highlight the commitment of the community to address critical issues and improve the lives of its residents.
