At the June 7 meeting of the Urbana School District #116 Board of Education, the board heard from Randy Ashman, director of facilities services, who explained the district is struggling to find contractors who have a large enough staff to keep its schools clean.
“We are currently working on a plan to move forward for the 2022-2023 school year for the whole year and work with 4 to 5, maybe 6 different contractors to facilitate the cleaning protocols for the schools,” Ashman said.
Ashman explained the district is entering into one-year, emergency contracts to give it time to evaluate long-term contract bids for the future.
Ashman said contractors are having a hard time finding enough employees to service the entire district.
Ashman said in order to even make it into the bidding process they need to offer workers a salary in the $16-$18 range.
The district's previous, longtime - contractor, ABM, had served notice of of contract termination in spring.
