University releases first-ever Sustainability Strategic Plan

Illinois State University is looking to the future with the release of a Sustainability Strategic Plan.

“This plan is the first of its kind for the University,” said Elisabeth Reed, director of Illinois State’s Office of Sustainability and member of the Presidential Sustainability Council. “It provides a roadmap for sustainability goals and commitments in the coming years.”

The plan outlines goals for the University, including creating more sustainability-related courses and research opportunities; prioritizing conservation and innovation for water, energy, and construction efforts; providing sustainable transportation incentives; and nurturing more leadership roles for students through campus and community partnerships.

The completed plan, approved by President Terri Goss Kinzy, will be presented at the next quarterly meeting of the Board of Trustees for Illinois State University. “Sustainability is an integral part of course work, research, and co-curricular activities at Illinois State,” said Kinzy. “This Sustainability Strategic Plan serves as a dynamic working document and a guide for the coming years as we continue to build on our success and work toward a sustainable future.”

A task force of more than 30 faculty, staff, and students from across campus worked together to research and develop the plan over the course of 18 months. Steering the collaborative effort were members of the University’s Office of Sustainability, the Center for a Sustainable Water Future, the Center for Civic Engagement, Facilities Management, University Housing, and Event Management, Dining, and Hospitality.

“This is a plan for the entire University community,” said Reed. “Everyone can help make a difference towards a more sustainable ISU.”
