City of Hoopeston Historic Preservation Commission Sesquicentennial Celebration Events Sub-Committee Met May 4.

Here is the minutes provided by the subcommittee:

I. Meeting was called to order at 7:03pm at the Little Lorraine Theatre, 216 E Main St.

II. Roll Call – 3 members present: Event Co-Chairs, Jeanette Andre’ & Valarie Hinkle, Secretary, Marta Pierce plus 5 guests in attendance.

III. Sesquicentennial Events:

A. Sunday, June 27th –Family Day: Community Church Service at 10am - Table and chairs from the Chamber of Commerce will be set up prior to Sunday. And we will leave them up during the week for any other events that need to use them. Valarie reported the sound guy will be setting up prior to Sunday as well. He is traveling from Indianapolis and she is requesting a gift card for gas as a thank you. Community Picnic at 11am – Meat (pulled pork) & hot dogs will be furnished along with the buns. Brenda is ordering from Mr. B’s. Bottled water from Aquality Solutions. Attendees will be asked to bring their own table service and sides. They must also reserve a table by calling City Hall (283-5833) or Brenda Crusinberry (217-474-9834) Deadline for reservations will be June 20th, this will allow time to order the quantity needed. Brenda has asked for 5 helpers. Beard Contest at Noon: Sue Burton of Sue’s Shear Design is sponsoring. She will get the judges and the prizes for the 4 winning categories. Sue is also requesting more advertising. Oldest/Youngest Citizen – Posted a request for families to submit their family member that could be the oldest but so far, no responses. They youngest we will have to wait to that day. Paige Brown suggested The Morgan’s who have been married 79 years. Gospel Music at 1pm –Jim Richards reported each group will perform about 40 minutes. The Clayton Family, The Evans Sisters and The Taubert Family have confirmed. At the end, Pastor Adam will ask that all join in to sing Amazing Grace. None of these groups have requested any type of payment. Photo Booth –Emily Leslie has agreed to do 11-3pm for families or individuals. She will use a digital camera so they can be posted online and then people can download. She will need 2 helpers and ideas for the backdrop. Kid’s Fishing Derby – 1pm – 3:30pm, Sharon Polson – Checking with Hoopeston Awards & Signs (Gilbert) to see how many participation ribbons they will be donating. Sharon stated prizes will be needed for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place in 3 age categories a total of 9 prizes the HPC will need to provide. “Wooden Nickels” will be given out with prizes. Sharon also asked for the Crabtree Shelter to be available to award the prizes and trophies. Sharon would like 5 volunteers. Dawn Layden & Ellen Scharlach have agreed to help.

B. Monday, June 28th – Ag Day: Sesquicentennial Farms Presentation 8am – 11am – Eric Layden – Has found 14 farms. Three of these he is still trying to find a contact or family member. He is sending out a letter to the farms telling them of the presentation of the 150th award. He is including 3 questions that they can discuss during their award presentation. Eric has found a sign that he would like to order that has the 3M laminating on aluminum. They are 12” x 18” in size. The company is Smartsign.com – they can have them done in a couple days. Estimated cost $700. Eric is planning on asking ag type businesses to donate towards the cost. He has also asked to take out the word “tour” on the tri-fold schedules. He feels it implies an actual tour. It was suggested that we try to get a van from the Multi Agency so people can ride it to the farms. Valarie called the board and they agreed. Silgan Containers - will host factory tour on Monday, June 28th, starting at 9am until 11am, going every 20 minutes. 5person limit each tour. Closed toed shoes must be worn. Eye & ear protection will be provided. Several time slots have been reserved. Downtown History Tour – at 1pm, 3pm, 5:30pm and 7pm if needed. Tom Sweeny and Marilyn will host. Tour starts at the corner of 3rd Street and Main.

C. Tuesday, June 29th – Youth Day: Dance –Teen Dance, DJ will play 7pm 9pm for 11 year old – 8th grade. Hoopeston Auxiliary attending. Children 3-10, activities, games, food from 5p-7pm: Learn & Lead Academy is sponsor. Children 3-10 must be accompanied by a parent, no drop offs. Location, McFerren Park Legion Shelter area. Give out wooden nickels during this event also. Self-guided Lorraine Theatre Tour, 1-3pm.

D. Wednesday, June 30th-: Magic show at the Lorraine – 6pm. Admission will be 2 wooden nickels for children- 10 & under and they must be accompanied by a parent. Betty Richards will let kids in regardless of the wooden nickel. Farm Animals & Pet Parade: 4-6pm, Paige Brown is bringing in her farm animals for kids. Would like to set up close to the theatre since there will be kids attending that. She will check to see where the best location will be. Sara Rhodes is putting together a pet parade for the same time. Valarie is waiting to hear back from her to finalized details. Self-paced Historical Church Tour, 1-3pm

E. Thursday, July 1st – Ladies Day- Flower/ Garden Tour- 9:30am-Noon This is a self-paced tour. Adding the Rotary Club garden in McFerren Park as a stop to the original 4 gardens. Fecker at 416 E Penn St; Dewitt at 846 E Maple; Fraley at 413 W Maple and Thomas at 928 W Penn. Claudia would like to know the number of participants prior to event. Promenade Meet at 3pm for photos, and at 3:30pm, Start walk at Library and end at the Methodist Church. Participants are requested to register with church secretary, 217-283-6738. Availability of 10 tables with 4 people each. In case of rain, all afternoon events on this day will take place at the church. High Tea at Methodist Church 4pm – Sarah Miller, presentation on tea etiquette. Lou Graham - historic information on library during high tea. The promenade and & tea are separate events and you do not have to attend both. They can be attended individually. Self-guided Lorraine Theatre Tour, 5-7pm.

F. Friday, July 2nd – Local Restaurants Samples – Robin Lawson has not given a go-ahead to this event. Valarie and Jeanette talked about connecting with 112 Wine & Events during their farmers market from 5- 7pm. BINGO –Denny, who ran the Bingo game at the Legion will run this event. The game will be held at the Legion Shelter in McFerren Park. He is thinking #75 people max. Hard cards only, $10 per card, no limit. 20 games total will be played and should last about 2hrs. He will need 5 people to help. Several volunteers from the Legion Bingo have volunteered to help with this. Denny said we will need $200 in ones and $300 in fives. Senior Citizen Dance-hosted by the Multi Agency but will be held at the Civic Center 6-8pm. Dixie Flyers will be performing.

IV. Announcement: Next Event Sub-Committee Meeting was not set. Meeting was adjourned at 8:45pm.
