Champaign FD responds to 220 fires in 2018

Champaign Fire District responded to 1545 calls in 2018 - 5 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Champaign included 220 fires - 98 structure fires, 38 vehicle fires and 84 other fires. The fire department also responded to 20 calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $2,435,927 in fire loss - or about $11,072 per fire.

The department also received 1305 false calls, including 80 malicious calls and 1225 other false calls.

10 fire service members were injured in fire-related incidents and 27 were injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Champaign Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 106 active employees and 98 retired or inactive employees, was $1,665,956 positive as of June 2017, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $6,170 for every fire in 2017.
