Chambana Sun

There were 23 offenders convicted of drug crimes released on parole in Vermilion County during the second quarter of 2019, according to Illinois Department of Corrections data obtained by the Chambana Sun.

The data shows that 18 men and five women were among the parolees. Of the parolees sentenced for drug crimes, two were veterans, and the median age was 37. The youngest parolee was a 23-year-old man sentenced in 2017, and the oldest was a 62-year-old man sentenced in 2017.

The offender who had been incarcerated the longest was Nathaniel J. Gherna. He was convicted in 2016 when he was 26 years old. He is now 29.

Under state law, paroled offenders are still in legal custody of the IDOC, meaning they can be taken back to a correctional center at any time if the state has probable cause or a warrant.
