PIPER CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT: With The Weather Being This Cold Please Take Proper Precautions When Going Outdoors!

Gasmetersnow

Piper City Fire Department issued the following announcement on Jan. 27.

Something people often overlook is snow and ice buildup on their natural gas meter. If the meter become buried with snow or covered in ice it can greatly affect the function and safety of the meter. The pressure regulator vents can become blocked allowing increased pressure into your home. If you smell natural gas get everyone out and call 9-1-1

To help avoid these potential issues clear the area around your meter by hand or with a broom. Keep shovels and snow blowers away from the meter. If the meter becomes encased in ice call your natural gas company and they can clear it. Never hit the meter to remove ice. This will also give emergency crews and your energy company access to work should a problem arise. Keep your roof above the meter free of ice or snow. Falling ice and snow can damage the meter causing it to leak or malfunction.

We recently had an incident where all of these safety tips came into play. Snow and ice fell from a roof line causing the meter to leak. The natural gas found an ignition source and a fire started at the meter. While mitigating the problem, fire crews did not have immediate access to the meter shut off valve due to snow buildup around the meter.

We all have the responsibility of keeping our homes safe. Stay safe and stay warm Fargo.
