Champaign City Council issued the following announcement on July 5.
The Champaign Fire Department responded to a working fire at 1616 Cruising Lane, Wednesday, July 4, 2018 at 10:56 a.m. Upon arrival on the scene, fire crews found smoke coming from the soffits of the home.
A resident discovered smoke coming from the utility room, evacuated the home and called 9-1-1. Firefighters arrived on the scene and deployed a single hose line to quickly extinguish a fire originating from the utility room.
Occupants of the home have been displaced because of this fire. There were no civilian injuries reported. One firefighter was treated on scene for heat-related issues and transported to Carle Hospital for evaluation. The cause of the fire remains undetermined as investigators continue their scene examination.
The Champaign Fire Department reminds all citizens to maintain a working smoke alarm in their place of residence and to have and practice a home escape plan. Smoke alarms can provide early notification when seconds count.
