City of Urbana Sustainability Advisory Commission met January 9. 

Here is the minutes as provided by the commission:

Commissioners Present: Chairperson Stacy Gloss, Dustin Allred, Claire Johnson, Andrew Stumpf, Morgan White, Tesfaye Wolde-Medhin


Commissioners Absent: Todd Rusk

Staff Present: Scott Tess, Kathryn Levy

Call to Order, Roll Call, and Declaration of Quorum

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Stacy Gloss. An introduction was made by newest

Commission member Tesfaye Wolde-Medhin. Kathryn Levy called the roll and a quorum was

present.

Changes to the Agenda

Discussion of the Off Fossil Fuels item was struck from the Agenda as there was no representative

from the organization present.

Approval of Minutes

Motion was made by Ms. White, second by Mr. Allred, to approve the Minutes from the December

5, 2017 meeting with corrections noted. Motion carried.

Public Input

There was no Public Input.

Communications

     Staff Report

Scott Tess gave the monthly Staff Report which included progress on the Climate Action Plan

(CAP) Phase 2, highlighting the guaranteed energy savings project, the potential for another round

Solar Urbana-Champaign, and community wide and government inventories of greenhouse gas

emissions completion dates.

Additionally, various energy and climate activities were noted.

An update on Environmental Division activities was provide. These included recent bids for

recycling contracts, curbside leaf collection, street can and facilities refuse collection, and battery

recycling.

The Report stated February 6, 2018 as the next meeting date.

Continuing Business

     Ready For 100

Michael Peterson from the Sierra Club briefly spoke about Ready For 100, the Sierra Club campaign

for accelerating a just and equitable transition to 100 percent clean energy.

Discussion ensued regarding next steps and the process for making recommendation to the Mayor

to sign the Mayors for 100% Clean Energy Endorsement.

Motion was made by Ms. White, second by Mr. Stumpf, to recommend the Mayor join the Ready

For 100 campaign by signing the Endorsement and to include our sustainability commitments in the

next iteration of City Council and Mayor Goals. Motion carried.

Marcus Ricci from Community Development noted there may be difficulties in achieving this goal

with current regulations that are in place.

     Public Engagement

Mr. Stumpf announced that the Public Engagement Committee he co-chairs with Mr. Rusk will be

meeting the following week to work on public engagement strategies.

There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 8:07 p.m.
