Sheriff's deputies and firefighters from the Champaign and Savoy districts will help distribute a $2,500 grant from Wal-Mart to help light up the holidays for eight families this year.
As part of the Shop with a Firefighter/Sheriff’s Deputy program, the selected families will enjoy a shopping spree on Thursday, Dec. 21 at the Savoy Walmart, located at 505 S. Dunlap Ave., according to a press release from the Savoy Fire Department.
Walmart Store Manager Terry Covey awarded the grant to the Savory Fire Department and Champaign County Sheriff's Office. Head Start and Carrie Busey School administrators helped select the participating families.
"It’s amazing that this is our fourth year of supporting eight local families in need,” said Sam Smith, a lieutenant with Savoy Fire District who was quoted in the Savoy release. “We look forward to this fun event.”
The Champaign County Sheriff's Department was grateful to both Walmart and the Savoy Fire Department for being included, the release stated.
“We take great pride in working with local fire departments and businesses in an effort to support families in need,” said Lt. Brian Mennenga with the Champaign County Sheriff's Office.
