Champaign mayor says city welcomes all

Refugee welcome

Citing citizens’ concerns about potential immigration reforms by the Trump Administration, Champaign Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen assured City Council leaders that the city “remains committed to fostering a friendly and welcoming community for all who choose to live here.”

Feinen, who delivered her remarks at a recent council meeting, reinforced the city’s commitment to inclusiveness.

“We applaud those who embrace our community’s diversity and show unconditional respect for one another,” Feinen said. “Now more than ever is the time for our residents to extend a neighborly hand and share reassuring words of encouragement to those facing adversity.”

Accordingly, Feinen pledged that city officials will increase educational efforts to make everyone aware of discrimination. She said that anyone who feels discriminated against should contact the Community Relations Office at 217-403-8830.

“We want everyone who lives works, and plays in Champaign to be successful – to know they are welcome here – and to feel at home," she said.
