Urbana mayoral candidates Diane Marlin, Laurel Prussing and Evelyn Underwood recently participated in a local forum.
The forum, sponsored by Champaign County's League of Women Voters (LWVCC) and NAACP as well as The News-Gazette, was aired live and then rebroadcast Feb. 2-5.
The three candidates are running in the Democratic primary on Feb. 28. The winning candidate will face Republican candidate Rex Bradfield in the consolidated election on Tuesday, April 4.
The forum, held on Jan. 30, saw a standing room-only crowd. The spectators had to use an overflow area to view the candidates as they answered questions. Trisha Crowley of the LWVCC moderated the forum.
Each candidate was given time for a two-minute opening and final statements. Crowley presented the questions submitted by community members; the candidates were allocated one minute each to respond. Questions ranged from Urbana's status as a sanctuary city to prison populations. One hot topic focused on how the mayoral candidates would address the increased violence in the city.
The 90-minute forum can be viewed on the UPTV6 Youtube channel. A second forum will be held on March 8, featuring the winner of the Democratic primary along with the Republican candidate.
