Champaign Board of Fire and Police Commissioners votes to promote probationary firefighter

Champaign Board of Fire and Police Commissioners met Monday, Nov. 28.

The Board of Fire and Police Commissioners conducts and approves the recruitment process for interviewing, testing, appointments, and promotion of all commissioned personnel below the rank of Deputy Chief in the Fire and Police departments. It is also responsible for conducting hearings and rendering decisions on disciplinary matters for both departments as provided for in the collective bargaining agreement.

• Request from the Fire Department to hire a Probationary Firefighter and issue a Class B commission

• Request from the Fire Department to promote a Firefighter to Engineer and issue a Class A commission

Staff Presenti: Anthony Cobb, Police Chief Amanda Farthing, Assistant HR Director Gary Ludwig, Fire Chief Stacy Rachel, HR Specialist Lisa Benker, Recording Secretary

Call to Order

Vice Chair Johnson called the meeting to order at 4:15 p.m., and he noted that a quorum was present.

Approval of Minutes

Vice Chair Johnson asked if there were any additions or corrections to the regular meeting minutes from November 28, 2016. Hearing none, the minutes were approved.

Correspondence

There was no correspondence for the Board to review.

Old Business

The item of Election of Officers will continue to be postponed until all commissioners are present.

New Business

The Board reviewed the 2017 Board of Fire and Police Commissioners Meeting Calendar.

Secretary Nystrom motioned that the meeting calendar be approved, and Vice Chair Johnson seconded the motion. There was no discussion. The motion passed 2-0.

Recommendations for Hire, Promotion, Removal, and for Class A or B Commissions

The Board reviewed a memorandum from David Ferber, Deputy Fire Chief, dated November 2, 2016, requesting that Probationary Firefighter Cole Hunt be promoted to Firefighter and issued a Class A commission. Secretary Nystrom made a motion to approve the promotion, and Vice Chair Johnson seconded the motion. There was no discussion. The motion passed 2-0.

Agenda Preparation

The next regularly scheduled meeting for the Board will be December 19, 2016.

Audience Participation

No one from the audience spoke before the Board.

Adjournment

With no further business for the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 4:18 p.m.
