The Urbana City Council unanimously approved a variance March 21 that will allow Geoffrey Merritt to build a canopy extending 7 feet over his front lawn at 303 W. Griggs St.
The address was originally permitted as a mail-order business but also hosts a small bike shop.
Urbana city code requires properties in that area to maintain a certain amount of front lawn, which the canopy will infringe upon.
The request was previously approved by the Urbana Zoning Board of Appeals 6-0.
