With heavy rains and wind expected to sweep through the area this season, Champaign officials are reminding residents to check the compliance of their home and business alarm systems that can sometimes be set off by extreme weather conditions.
City officials said the one-time alarm registration permit fee of $50, which should be paid when an alarm system is installed, covers up to three false alarms in a one-year period. Fees beyond the third call begin at $100.
Fees for non-permit holders are $200 beginning with the first alarm, in addition to a potential $300 penalty for not having a permit.
Residents and business owners can register or renew alarm permits over the phone at 888-408-9026 or online under the "Alarm Permits and Renewals" tab on www.champaignpolice.com.
