The Champaign City Council will begin copying and preserving city documents, following approval at its Jan. 26 meeting.
The city currently has only one full set of official documents that begin in 1857 with the city's earliest records and continue through today.
To add resiliency to the collection, the city will copy the documents onto microfilm, which will be maintained and open to the public at Champaign County Historical Archives at the Urbana Free Library. The city also expects to scan and post copies of certain documents on the city's website and is investigating an archival system for some of the more modern paper documents.
City officials expect the collection will be fully copied and digitized sometime in early 2017.
