The City of Champaign Human Relations Commission discussed the Bristol Place Redevelopment Project at its meeting Nov. 2.
Neighborhood Programs Manager Kerri Spear reviewed the project's request for bids, the clearance phase of the project, the reconstruction phase of the project, its financial plan, and its criteria for selecting a developer.
As of early December, the city had bought 32 properties and demolished 14 homes in preparation for the development. Two more were under contract. Six families had been given vouchers for housing as part of the city's effort to relocate families who had been pressured to leave to accommodate the development plans.
The City Council and other groups will hold study sessions in March and April to review the next phase of development plans, with the expectation of approving the plans in May.
Spear said construction was expected to begin next year, with 100 percent occupancy expected by 2019.
