Gov. Bruce Rauner has ordered all U.S. and state flags to fly at half-staff from sunrise to sunset Monday in honor of the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Japanese forces unexpectedly bombed the American base at Pearl Harbor, on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, on Dec. 7, 1941. The attack killed 2,403 people and injured 1,178 others, prompting the U.S. to enter World War II.
Officials at the USS Arizona Memorial estimated last year that there are between 2,000 and 2,500 Pearl Harbor survivors still alive out of the approximately 60,000 people who survived the attack.
