Urbana's 33-unit Highland Green project was awarded $522,535 in federal tax credits last month by the Illinois Housing Development Authority.
Highland Green consists of single-family units and duplexes for working families, and nine units will be designated for veterans and their families. The development will be certified as a green community.
The city of Urbana donated the land, which is adjacent to the Crystal View Townhomes project, and the developments will share the existing community center at Crystal View. Highland Green also features community gardens for the residents.
"It’s a testament to the hard work and sustained efforts of so many community leaders that we are now able to proceed with this critical new development,” city of Urbana Community Development Director Libby Tyler said. “The Highland Green development will be an outstanding addition to Urbana, providing high-quality housing in a beautiful setting for hard-working families and our veterans to whom we owe so much.”
Construction on Urbana Greens will begin in 2016. The development will be built by Brinshore Development of Northbrook, the Housing Authority of Champaign County, and the Homestead Corporation of Champaign-Urbana.
