The city of Urbana's Sustainable Water Management Plan has earned recognition from the Illinois chapter of the American Planning Association (APA).
The plan sets goals for water use in city buildings, outlines conservation goals for new building projects, and proposes ways of engaging Urbana residents and businesses in the ongoing water-saving conversation.
"[Illinois State Planning Awards] exemplify the practice of urban planning and each stand as an example of ways our members are 'Making Great Communities Happen'," the APA said.
City officials said the plan is about two-thirds complete, and is expected to be accomplished by 2020. Already it has reduced water use in city facilities by 48 percent and sparked a number of other water-saving programs around the city, like residential rain barrel distribution and gardening education.
