The Champaign Fire Department has announced that they will be conducting a door-to-door canvassing effort in two neighborhoods on April 18, 2024. This initiative comes in the wake of recent fires in the area, with a focus on ensuring the safety of residents by testing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and installing new alarms where necessary.
Firefighters will be visiting the 1300 block of Joanne Ln. from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and the 4800 block of W. Windsor Rd. from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. during the canvassing. They will be checking for the presence of functional smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in homes while also providing valuable fire safety information to the residents.
The importance of having operational smoke alarms in homes was underscored by the Champaign Fire Department, stating, "working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half." Residents of Champaign are encouraged to reach out to the main fire station at 217-403-7200 if they require assistance with smoke or carbon monoxide alarms or wish to schedule a home safety visit.
This proactive approach by the Champaign Fire Department aims to enhance the safety and well-being of the community members, emphasizing the critical role that proper fire safety measures play in preventing tragic incidents.
