Illinois falls to No. 16 Michigan State in Big Ten women’s soccer matchup

Illinois women’s soccer lost to No. 16 Michigan State 5-1 on Sunday at DeMartin Stadium in East Lansing. The defeat brings Illinois’ record to 12-4-1 overall and 5-4-1 in Big Ten play, while Michigan State improves to 8-3-5 overall and 5-1-3 in the conference.

Michigan State took an early lead with a goal from Maggie Illig in the 13th minute. Illinois responded in the 25th minute when Sarah Foley scored on a free kick after Sydney Stephens drew a foul. This marked Foley’s seventh goal of the season, making her the team’s leading scorer.

After halftime, Michigan State dominated, scoring four goals in the second half at the 58th, 61st, 67th, and 77th minutes. The final score was 5-1.

Illinois will finish its regular season on October 26 with an away match against Michigan. The game is set to begin at noon Central Time.
