Illinois women’s tennis players Alice Xu and Tess Bucher have advanced to the semifinals of the ITA Midwest Regional doubles tournament. The tournament, held at the Atkins Tennis Center in Urbana, continued on Sunday with the Illini duo securing their third consecutive win. Xu and Bucher defeated the top-seeded and No. 14-ranked pair Jones and Bernales from Michigan by a score of 8-4.
In singles play, McKenna Schaefbauer won her round of 16 match against Ellie Blackford of Michigan State. After splitting the first two sets 6-4, Schaefbauer was down 4-5 in the third set but came back to win 7-5. She then faced No. 26-ranked Lily Jones of Michigan in the quarterfinals and lost 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-2.
Ariel Madatali was also eliminated by Michigan’s Jones in the round of 16, falling 6-1, 6-1.
The tournament’s fifth day will begin at 10 a.m. Central Time with the doubles semifinals. Singles semifinals are scheduled for 1 p.m. Xu and Bucher will face Dagan Fruchtman and Feldman from Northwestern in their semifinal match.
“We are very proud of Alice and Tess for their performance so far and look forward to seeing them compete in the semifinals,” said a representative from Illinois women’s tennis.
The ITA Midwest Regional is an annual event that brings together collegiate tennis players from across the region to compete in singles and doubles draws.
