Illinois women’s tennis opens ITA Midwest Regionals with early wins

Illinois women’s tennis players Rosie Seccia and Risa Ueno began their competition at the ITA Midwest Regionals in Urbana, Illinois, on Thursday. Both athletes participated in the singles qualifying draw.

Seccia secured a victory in her first match, defeating Illinois State’s Silvia Pomarolli 6-4, 6-3. She was then defeated by Sophia Shlyakhta from Northern Illinois, with a score of 6-4, 6-3.

Ueno lost her opening match to Wisconsin’s Ellison Reynoldson, 6-2, 7-6(3), in the qualifying round of 64. In the consolation draw, Ueno rebounded to defeat Illinois State’s Sophia Lowe, 6-4, 6-3.

Looking ahead, two rounds of main draw doubles matches are scheduled for Friday, along with the singles main draw round of 64. All four Illinois doubles teams will compete, as well as all six singles players from Illinois who will begin play in the main draw.

The results for Day 1 included Seccia’s win over Pomarolli and Ueno’s victory against Lowe. Day 2 will see several Illinois doubles and singles players in action, with matches scheduled throughout the day.
