On September 28, 2025, representatives from the City of Champaign’s Equity & Engagement Department participated in the Sons and Daughters in Heaven Gala. The event also included Champaign Police Chief Timothy Tyler, Council Member Shauna Clayborn, Senator Paul Faraci, officials from the City of Urbana, and Blueprint partner First Followers. The gala was organized by A Cry for You, a community group.

The annual event aims to raise awareness about gun violence and provide support to families who have lost loved ones as a result. Proceeds benefit A Cry for You, which was started by Bonnie Miller after her son died due to gun violence. Seon Williams and Katina Wilcher supported Miller in founding the organization. The group provides a supportive environment for grieving families and offers resources that address self-care and basic needs.

During the gala, appreciation awards were given to Miller, Wilcher, and Williams for their service and leadership. Karen Simms was also recognized for her role in helping establish A Cry for You and assisting with its mission to turn “pain into purpose.” Their efforts continue to offer healing and hope within the community.
