Illinois junior Kenna Phelan has been named the Big Ten Setter of the Week, according to an announcement made by the conference office on Monday. The recognition comes after Phelan led the Fighting Illini women's volleyball team to victories over [RV] Oregon and #10 Purdue.
During the two matches, Phelan averaged 9.4 assists per set and 2.4 digs per set, finishing with a total of 66 assists, 17 digs, two kills, two aces, and a block.
In her first Big Ten match against Oregon at Huff Hall on Friday, Phelan recorded 27 assists along with seven digs, one ace, and one block as Illinois won in straight sets.
On Sunday at Purdue, Phelan posted her fourth double-double of the season with 39 assists and 10 digs. She also contributed two kills and an ace in Illinois' win over the tenth-ranked Boilermakers. This victory marked Illinois' first top-10 win since 2021.
The team averaged 14.3 kills per set over the weekend. Additionally, Illinois achieved a kill on nearly 42% of Phelan's set attempts.
Phelan is the first Illinois player to earn Big Ten Setter of the Week honors since Diana Brown received the award in September 2021.
Illinois will continue its conference schedule at #7 Wisconsin on Thursday before hosting Michigan State at home on Sunday.
