The University of Illinois men's golf team, ranked No. 12 in the Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches Poll, is set to compete at the Windon Memorial Classic on September 29-30. The event will take place at Knollwood Club in Lake Forest, Illinois, a par-72 course measuring 7,202 yards.
Knollwood Club has a notable history in competitive golf. Designed by C.H. Alison and opened in 1925, it has hosted major events such as the US Amateur Championship in 1956 and the first USGA Mid-Amateur Championships in 1981 and 1982. In addition, former Illini golfer Dylan Meyer won the Western Amateur Championship at this venue in 2016.
The Windon Memorial Classic will follow a 54-hole format over two days. Teams will play two rounds (36 holes) on Monday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m., followed by one round (18 holes) on Tuesday beginning with tee times at 8 a.m.
Sixteen teams are participating in this year's tournament. Alongside Illinois are other ranked or notable programs including No. 22 New Mexico and teams receiving votes such as East Tennessee State, Indiana, Northwestern (the host), Notre Dame, Purdue, and SMU. Other competitors include Kansas, Marquette, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Oral Roberts, UC Davis, and USF.
Illinois' lineup for the tournament features Max Herendeen at No. 1 position; Ryan Voois at No. 2; Dane Huddleston at No. 3; Trey Marrion at No. 4; Freddie Turnell at No. 5; and Dujuan Snyman competing as an individual.
This marks Illinois’ second consecutive appearance at the Windon Memorial Classic after finishing sixth last year when it was held at Conway Farms Golf Club. Returning players from that event include senior Ryan Voois (who finished tied for 64th), junior Max Herendeen (tied for 15th), and sophomore Trey Marrion (tied for 25th).
Live scoring during the tournament will be available through Scoreboard powered by Clippd on the event’s website with recaps posted each day on FightingIllini.com.
Following this event, Illinois is scheduled to compete next at the Moraine Intercollegiate hosted by Miami (Ohio) from October 13-14.
