Congresswoman Mary Miller of Illinois's 15th District has introduced a constitutional amendment aimed at affirming parental rights in the United States. The proposal seeks to ensure that parents have the fundamental authority to direct the upbringing, education, and care of their children.
"For too long, unelected bureaucrats and activist judges have trampled on the role of parents, treating them as obstacles instead of the primary protectors and decision-makers for their children. That must end,” said Congresswoman Mary Miller. “My Parental Rights Amendment will enshrine this truth in the United States Constitution, ensuring once and for all that parents, not the government, hold the ultimate authority and responsibility for the upbringing, education, and care of their children."
The proposed amendment outlines several key points: it designates parental liberty in directing children's upbringing as a fundamental right; affirms that parents can choose private, religious, or home schools as alternatives to public education; stipulates that neither federal nor state governments may infringe on these rights unless there is a compelling interest; and ensures these rights are not denied due to disability.
The amendment has gained support from Representatives Sheri Biggs, Ashley Hinson, Mike Collins, Addison McDowell, Ben Cline, and Greg Steube. Organizations backing the measure include Parental Rights Foundation, Concerned Women for America, Eagle Forum, Advance USA, Family Research Council, American Association of Christian Schools, Independent Women’s Forum, Moms for America, Parents Defending Education, Military Families in Support of Parental Rights, Moms for Liberty, American Family Project, and Alliance Defending Freedom.
Mary Miller has represented Illinois’s 15th district since 2021 after succeeding John Shimkus. She secured her seat by defeating Paul Lange in 2022 with over 71% of the vote and Erika Weaver in 2020 with more than 73% support.
