Adam Jilly, a freshman from Budapest, Hungary, has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week following his debut performance at the Battle In The Bay Classic in San Francisco. The announcement was made by the conference office on Wednesday.
Jilly achieved his first singles and doubles wins as a college athlete during the tournament, which took place from September 11 to 14. In singles play, he defeated Arizona State's Jelani Sarr, who is ranked No. 118 nationally. The match went to three sets, with Jilly winning the deciding superbreaker 10-6.
In doubles competition, Jilly partnered for a win against Cal's Bernardo Munk Mesa and Lenn Luemkemann in the opening round of the doubles consolation bracket, securing a 6-3 victory.
Jilly entered college tennis as the No. 10-ranked newcomer in the ITA preseason rankings. This recognition marks his first career Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor and is also Illinois' first recipient since the award was introduced by the Big Ten in January.
