Congresswoman Mary Miller of Illinois’ 15th district has introduced the SAFE Driving Laws Act, a bill designed to prevent sanctuary states from issuing driver’s licenses and Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs) to undocumented immigrants. The legislation proposes penalties for non-compliant states, including the loss of federal transportation funding.
“Sanctuary states like Illinois are gambling with American lives by handing out driver’s licenses and CDLs to illegal aliens,” said Congresswoman Mary Miller. “It’s a dangerous, irresponsible policy that puts innocent Americans in grave danger. My bill will ensure that these states comply or risk losing federal funding.”
If enacted, the SAFE Driving Laws Act would:
- Withhold federal transportation funds from states issuing licenses to undocumented immigrants or failing to share criminal alien information with federal authorities.
- Reduce by 50% allocations from the National Highway Performance Program and Surface Transportation Block Grant Program for states not complying.
- Assign sole responsibility for CDLs issued within state borders to the respective state governments.
- Require the Secretaries of Homeland Security and Transportation to maintain a public database tracking each state’s compliance.
States would be required to comply by the beginning of fiscal year 2027 or face annual reductions in funding.
The bill is currently cosponsored by Representatives Tim Burchett, Barry Moore, Jim Baird, Nancy Mace, Brandon Gill, Troy Nehls, Byron Donalds, Scott Perry, Randy Weber, Mike Haridopolos, John McGuire, Ralph Norman, Barry Loudermilk, Eli Crane, and Tony Wied.
Mary Miller has represented Illinois’ 15th congressional district since 2021 after succeeding John Shimkus. In her previous elections, she won against Paul Lange in 2022 with over 71% of the vote and against Erika Weaver in 2020 with more than 73%.
