The City of Champaign has announced plans to host the Welcoming Week Family Festival, an event intended to celebrate immigrants and promote community unity. The festival is scheduled for Sunday, September 21, 2025, from noon to 3 p.m. at Downtown Champaign Plaza, located at the corner of Neil and Main Streets.
According to city officials, the festival will offer cultural performances, family activities, food trucks, and interactive experiences suitable for all ages. “It’s more than a celebration—it’s a space where community connections and cross-cultural appreciation are front and center,” city representatives said in a statement. They emphasized that the event is free and open to the public. “The City encourages individuals and families from all cultures, backgrounds, and identities to participate, connect, and celebrate together as one community.”
Welcoming Week highlights the presence of over 25,000 foreign-born residents in Champaign County. Organizers describe it as “a powerful reminder of the importance of building a community where everyone feels seen, supported, and valued.” The week-long observance runs from September 12 through September 21 this year and includes more than 20 events such as cultural showcases and educational workshops designed to foster understanding among community members.
