Adam Niemerg, a State Representative from Illinois, criticized Governor J.B. Pritzker for his stance on immigration law enforcement during congressional testimony. Niemerg said that Pritzker's opposition to these efforts highlights a disconnect with Illinois residents. This statement was made on the social media platform X.
"Today, JB Pritzker showed just how out of touch he is with the people of Illinois when he testified before Congress," said Adam M. Niemerg. "At one point, JB proudly declared, “I will stand in the way of Tom Homan. He's more interested in blocking those who are trying to enforce our immigration laws than protecting American citizens. The issue is simple: You must enter the United States legally."
At a June 2025 congressional hearing, Governor Pritzker defended Illinois' sanctuary state policies. According to Axios, he argued that the state complies with federal law while advocating for humane treatment of migrants and criticized threats to cut federal funding.
According to Reuters, in 2025, Illinois officials expressed support for deporting undocumented violent criminals but continued to advocate for legal protections and a path to citizenship for long-term residents. This reflects a blend of enforcement and inclusion policies.
As reported by AP News, the 2017 TRUST Act in Illinois prohibits local police from cooperating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on civil immigration cases. This sanctuary policy is also implemented in several other states but faces mixed enforcement outcomes and ongoing legal challenges.
Niemerg, representing Illinois' 102nd District since his election in 2020, is known as a farmer, National Guard veteran, and frequent critic of sanctuary policies. He serves on the House Immigration and Human Rights Committee, according to Ballotpedia.
