Fighting Illini sophomore golfer Max Herendeen has been selected to join Team USA for the 2025 Arnold Palmer Cup. The announcement was made on Thursday, May 29.

Herendeen will make his debut at this prestigious Ryder Cup-style event, scheduled to take place from June 5-7 at Congaree Golf Club near Ridgeland, South Carolina.

Herendeen's selection follows a successful season where he earned unanimous First Team All-Big Ten and PING All-Midwest Region honors for the second consecutive year. He led the Illini with a scoring average of 70.84 over 43 rounds. His performance included six top-10 finishes, four of which were inside the top five, and he carded 14 rounds in the 60s. Additionally, Herendeen is part of the 2025 U.S. Elite Amateur National Program and was recognized as a Second Team All-American in his freshman year by PING in 2024. He also received accolades as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and was named to the GCAA All-Freshman Team in 2024.

Herendeen becomes the eighth different Illini men's golfer to compete at the Palmer Cup, marking Illinois' representation for the fourth time in five years. Previous Illini participants include Tommy Kuhl (2023), Adrien Dumont de Chassart (2021 and 2022), Nick Hardy (2017), Charlie Danielson (2016), Thomas Detry (2014 and 2015), Thomas Pieters (2012), and Scott Langley (2010).
