Illini women's tennis secures victory over Purdue, advances to Big Ten tournament

Fighting Illini junior McKenna Schaefbauer secured a key victory for the Illinois women's tennis team on Sunday as they swept No. 60 Purdue 4-0 to close the regular season. The event occurred at the Schwartz Tennis Center in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Illinois, ranked No. 42, improved its season record to 13-11 overall and 8-5 in Big Ten play with the win against Purdue. The Boilermakers fell to 11-9 overall and a 5-8 conference record. This victory adds to Illinois' successful streak of 12 consecutive wins over Purdue, marking their fifth road win and fourth successive victory this year.

In doubles, Illinois claimed their 16th point of the season against Purdue. At the No. 3 doubles, Schaefbauer and Kasia Treiber teamed up for a 6-4 win, improving their overall record to 17-12. Meanwhile, Alice Xu and Violeta Martinez clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 win at No. 2 doubles, enhancing their overall record to 13-5.

In singles play, the Illini maintained their momentum by sealing five of the initial sets. Megan Heuser was the first to finish in singles, earning a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2. Treiber followed with her own 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles. Schaefbauer completed the sweep with a 6-3, 6-3 victory in the No. 1 singles match.

The final score tallied to Illinois 4, Purdue 0, leading the Illini forward to the Big Ten Tournament scheduled in Ojai, California, from April 23 to 26.
