Illinois ranks second after Day 1 at Memphis Intercollegiate golf tournament

Sophomore Max Herendeen and junior Ryan Voois from the University of Illinois have secured themselves in the top five individual positions at the Memphis Intercollegiate, as the 10th-ranked Fighting Illini team stands in second place. This puts them heading into the final round of the tournament, hosted in Cordova, Tennessee, on Tuesday.

Herendeen scored 71 and 73 in the rounds played and sits three strokes behind the leader, Diego Lourenco from Memphis, who is at 3-under. Voois trails Herendeen by two shots, with his best performance coming in the second round where he achieved a 69, tying him for the tournament's most birdies at eight.

The younger members of the team, Trey Marrion and Jake Birdwell, both posted 5-over and tied for 15th, while sophomore Ethan Wilson stands at 7-over, tying for 19th. Senior Jackson Buchanan ended 10-over, positioning him in a tie for 32nd in the 84-player field approaching the final round.

As a team, Illinois has accumulated rounds of 298 and 291, trailing five strokes behind Memphis at 8-over. Southern Miss currently holds the third position at 24-over, with Samford and Austin Peay closing out the top five standings at 31-over.

The final round is scheduled for Tuesday starting at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. The Illinois team will begin their day on holes one through three, competing alongside Memphis and Southern Miss. Scores will be updated live via Clippd scoreboard.
