Lucas Byrd secured his first national title at 133 pounds during the NCAA Championships held at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. This victory marked Byrd as the 21st Fighting Illini wrestler to achieve a national championship, contributing to the program's 25th individual national title. He is also noted as Illinois' first NCAA Champion since Isaiah Martinez in 2016 and the inaugural champion in the 133-pound weight class.
Head coach Mike Poeta expressed his pride in Byrd's accomplishment, stating, "I couldn't be happier for Lucas Byrd. If anybody deserved to be the NCAA Champion this year, it's him." Poeta highlighted Byrd's dedication and effort throughout his journey, emphasizing how significant it was for him to become a national champion.
Byrd shared insights into his mindset and strategy during the competition: "I'll say the same thing I did after I won the semifinals I just have to stay where my toes are at," he remarked. He credited coach Jeremy Hunter for their strong communication and trust during matches. Reflecting on his journey, Byrd acknowledged the support from his coaches and family: "It has been one hell of a journey... My bond with Jeremy is unmatched."
In a closely contested final against Drake Ayala of Iowa, Byrd emerged victorious with a TB-2 3-2 decision. Their previous encounters this season saw Ayala winning once and Byrd leveling the series with a pin during the Big Ten Championships finals.
Illinois finished tenth out of sixty teams, marking their highest placement since the 2015-16 season. The team scores were led by Penn State with 177 points.
