Fighting Illini women's tennis head coach Evan Clark achieved a milestone by becoming the program's all-time winningest head coach. This achievement was marked by Illinois' victory over Nebraska with a 4-0 score on Sunday. Clark, in his tenth season, has now accumulated a record of 139-95 at Illinois.
The win improved No. 46 Illinois to a 7-8 overall record and 2-2 in Big Ten play. The team has a balanced record of 6-6 at the Atkins Tennis Center this season. Nebraska, meanwhile, holds a 10-5 overall record and remains winless in league play with an 0-4 record.
The Illini secured their ninth doubles point of the season and third within Big Ten matches. Alice Xu and Violeta Martinez claimed victory first with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, improving their partnership record to 7-3 for the season. Following them, Megan Heuser and Kida Ferrari won their match at No. 1 doubles with another score of 6-2.
In singles play, Ferrari increased Illinois' lead to 2-0 with her straight sets victory at No. 5 singles, marking her first Big Ten singles win this season. Kasia Treiber then added another point for Illinois with her own straight sets victory at No. 6 singles.
Megan Heuser completed the team's sweep by clinching her match at No. 2 singles after recovering from a deficit in the second set to win in straight sets as well.
Illinois managed to capture all six first sets across the singles matches and secured nine out of ten completed frames during singles competition.
FINAL SCORE: NO. 46 ILLINOIS (7-8; 2-2 B1G) defeated NO. 58 NEBRASKA (10-5, 0-4 B1G) with a score of four to zero.
The Fighting Illini are set to continue their home stand next weekend when they face Oregon on March 22 followed by No.19 Washington on March 24 at the Atkins Tennis Center.
