Illinois secured a 4-1 victory over Indiana at the IU Tennis Center on Sunday, improving their overall record to 9-5 and their Big Ten record to 3-1. The Fighting Illini claimed the doubles point for the fourth consecutive match, followed by singles wins in positions No. 1, 5, and 6.
Head coach Brad Dancer expressed satisfaction with his team's performance, stating: "Great bounceback effort from the guys. This team has a lot of pride, and it showed in our preparation yesterday and this morning. We are still making some of the same mistakes we made in the fall. It's time to make better in-match adjustments. That falls on us coaches in terms of guidance and our student-athletes to step up and be courageous with their play."
The duo of Tyler Bowers and Kenta Miyoshi achieved the first doubles win at No. 1 by defeating Indiana's Jip van Assendelft and Ben Pomeranets with a score of 6-3. At No. 2 doubles, William Mroz and Zach Viiala maintained their unbeaten streak as partners with a victory over Sam Scherer and Matteo Antonescu, also by a score of 6-3.
In singles play, Viiala extended Illinois' lead with a straightforward win against Indiana's Karan Raghavendra at No. 5 singles. He secured a dominant straight-set victory to achieve his sixth dual singles triumph this spring.
Despite an Indiana win at No. 3 singles, Miyoshi delivered a two-set win over Jip van Assendelft at No. 1 singles, enhancing his record to 9-3 for the season.
Mathis Debru concluded the event with his fourth straight singles win against Nikola Kolyachev at No. 6 singles, securing Illinois' team victory.
The Illini are set to begin a two-match homestand on Friday when they host UCLA for their inaugural meeting as Big Ten competitors.
