The University of Illinois' men's tennis team, ranked No. 20, achieved a comprehensive victory over Wisconsin with a 7-0 scoreline at the Atkins Tennis Center on Sunday. This win marks their second consecutive triumph in Big Ten play, enhancing their home record to 5-0 this season.
Head coach Brad Dancer expressed satisfaction with the team's progress: "Any time you get to 2-0 in the conference, I'll always be thrilled with that start," he said. Despite facing challenges such as illnesses within the team, Dancer emphasized the strong culture and camaraderie among players: "They believe in each other. They play for each other."
In doubles action, Mathis Debru and Jeremy Zhang secured an early win against Wisconsin's Edouard Aubert and Matthew Fullerton. The decisive point was clinched by William Mroz and Zach Viiala after a tense tiebreaker against Michael Minasyan and Patrik Meszaros.
Debru continued his strong performance into singles play by defeating Sachiv Kumar in straight sets. Other notable victories included Kenta Miyoshi's dominant match against Michael Minasyan and Tyler Bowers' hard-fought win over Tomas Zlatohlavek.
Jeremy Zhang concluded the day's matches with a straight-set victory over Matthew Fullerton, ensuring Illinois completed the sweep.
Illinois will next face Purdue and Indiana on the road as they continue their Big Ten campaign.
