Champaign Police responded to a traffic incident in the 500 block of N. Market Street at 6:03 p.m. on March 4, 2025. The report involved a vehicle and pedestrian crash. Upon arrival, officers found a 58-year-old man with severe injuries and provided medical aid with help from the Champaign Fire Department before he was transported to a hospital, where he later died.

The vehicle involved had left the scene by the time police arrived. As part of their investigation into the hit-and-run, officers closed off the area to traffic. At 7:45 p.m., Fernando Lorenzo-Raymundo, aged 36, came forward at the Champaign Police Department as the driver involved in the incident. After an interview, Lorenzo-Raymundo received citations for driving with a suspended license, driving without insurance, and leaving the scene of an accident. He was subsequently arrested for leaving the scene of a fatal accident, and his vehicle was impounded. The road reopened around midnight.

Despite making an arrest, police continue their investigation and urge local residents or businesses with surveillance cameras to contact them if they have relevant footage. Updates will be shared as available.
