The University of Illinois men's golf team, ranked 12th nationally, finished in 10th place at the Southern Highlands Collegiate held at the Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas. The team achieved head-to-head victories over four top 30-ranked programs during the event.
The Illini ended their tournament play with a team score of 1-over 289 on Tuesday, resulting in a total score of 887 (+23) over three rounds. Junior Ryan Voois led the team with his fourth consecutive top-25 finish, tying for 21st place individually with a score of 221 (+5). Voois improved significantly after an initial round of 79 (+7), recording a second-round score of 70 (-2) and finishing with an even-par 72 in the final round.
Sophomore Max Herendeen completed the tournament two shots behind Voois, tying for 30th place with a final score of 223 (+7). Three other members of the Illini lineup—Ethan Wilson, Jackson Buchanan, and Trey Marrion—all tied for 39th place at 225 (+9). Notably, Wilson posted a standout performance in Round 3 with a team-leading score of 2-under par.
Freshman Jake Birdwell participated as an individual competitor and tied for 54th place with a total score of 227 (+11).
In terms of team results, No. 2-ranked Auburn secured the title with an overall score of 855 (-9), finishing ten strokes ahead of host UNLV (+1). New Mexico took third place at +7, followed by No. 9 Virginia at +10. Several teams including Oklahoma and Florida tied for fifth place at +19.
Next on the schedule for the Fighting Illini is participation in the Pauma Valley Invitational hosted by Loyola Marymount from March 17-18 in Southern California.
