Fighting Illini women's tennis team concluded its nonconference schedule with a successful doubleheader at the Atkins Tennis Center on Saturday. The team secured victories against Western Michigan and Chicago State, marking an important step as they prepare for upcoming Big Ten play.
In the first match, Illinois dominated Western Michigan with a 7-0 win. Rosie Seccia achieved her first career clinch during this match. Ariel Madatali contributed significantly to the team's performance by winning at No. 5 singles with a score of 6-0, 6-1.
The Illini's overall record improved to 5-6 for the season and 5-5 at home. This follows their challenging start, facing nine consecutive matches against Power 4 opponents, including four ranked in the top 25.
During the match against Western Michigan, Alice Xu and Violeta Martinez were quick to secure a victory in doubles at No. 2, followed by Megan Heuser and Kida Ferrari clinching another point at No. 1 doubles.
The second match of the day saw Illinois achieve a swift victory over Chicago State in less than an hour. The opposing team forfeited action at No. 3 doubles before McKenna Schaefbauer and Kasia Treiber earned a decisive win at No. 2 doubles.
Rosie Seccia continued her success by securing another win after her opponent retired during their singles match. Kasia Treiber added to Illinois' tally with a flawless performance at No. 5 singles, winning without dropping a game.
Ariel Madatali sealed Illinois' triumph over Chicago State with another straight-set victory, bringing her total wins this season to twelve—a team best.
Looking ahead, Illinois will begin Big Ten competition on the road next weekend with matches against Minnesota on March 7 and Wisconsin on March 9.
